To isolate the issue whether it is hardware or software we need to perform these troubleshooting steps.
Step 1: Power Drain,
Step 2: Reset BIOS.
Step 3: Update BIOS
Step 4: Disable Windows XP restart feature.
To start with troubleshooting I recommend you to download the latest bios updates from the following Weblink :
Step 1: Power Drain Procedure:
1. Disconnect the AC Adapter.
2. Remove the Battery.
3. Hold the Power button down for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
4. Reconnect the AC adapter.
5. Turn on the Notebook power.
Step 2: Reset the BIOS
The settings made in the BIOS Setup utility control the hardware and therefore have a fundamental effect on how the computer operates.
To run the BIOS Setup utility
1. Turn on or restart the notebook.
2. Press the F2 or F10 key when the "HP Invent" logo appears on the screen.
3. Under Exit menu, select "Load Setup Defaults."
Step 3: Update BIOS
Go to Hp.com support and drivers page and download latest BIOS update.
Step 4: Disabling Windows XP automatic restart feature.
Sometimes, Windows XP might suddenly restart without any warning. To resolve this issue, disable the automatically restart on system failure feature.
To disable the automatically restart on system failure feature, follow the steps given below:
1. Click Start, right-click My Computer icon, and then Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab, and then Settings in the Startup & Recovery section.
3. Remove the checkmark next to Automatically Restart under System Failure.
4. Click OK to close the Startup and Recovery window, and then OK to close the System Properties window.
5. Restart the computer.
This should resolve the issue. If still issue persist then perform the steps mentioned below.

1. Remove unwanted startup programs.
2. Close unwanted background applications
3. Improve system resources.
===Remove unwanted startup programs===
It appears that there are several applications, which are scheduled to launch at Startup process. Certainly, these applications and services of Windows XP slow down the overall performance of notebook.
To resolve the issue, you need to disable the unwanted startup application using MSConfig utility. Msconfig is an application used to prevent other applications from opening with Windows. The following steps explain how to use Msconfig to resolve issues with the computer:
1. Click Start and then click Run.
2. In the Open field, type: msconfig
3. Click OK. The System Configuration Utility window appears.
4. Click Startup tab to display a list of software applications and settings that can be disabled.
5. Remove checkmarks to disable items.
6. Click OK when finished.
7. Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
====Close unwanted background applications===
Additionally, it is necessary to consider those programs, which are running in background. As these programs affects the system performance considerably.
1. Press and hold the CTRL + ALT + DELETE keys on your keyboard. The Windows Task Manager opens showing a list of all running programs.
2. Click the Processes tab.
3. Select the program you want to close and click End Process.
4. If another screen opens stating the task has stopped responding, click End Task.
5. Repeat Steps 1 - 4 for each of the programs you want to close, except for Explorer and Systray.
Above steps should resolve the issue completely.
